My name is Steve Loates and I am an entrepreneur.
From school I started out my business life in the service department of a small electronics company but quickly realized that product support and IT did not fit with my personality. I moved into sales and marketing as soon as the opportunity presented itself and realized I had found my niche.
Then, quite by accident, my entrepreneurial journey began when I launched my first business. When I say by accident, I mean that I wasn’t looking for a new opportunity. I just happened to be at the right place, at the right time and recognized an opportunity when it presented itself. So I took the leap of faith and jumped onto the roller coaster ride that is called “being your own boss”. I wish I could tell you that I knew without a doubt that it would work, but that wouldn’t be true. Like many entrepreneurs before me, those early years were a struggle and there were many highs and lows.
But I persevered and held onto that roller coaster for dear life. And what a ride it was, from economic boom times to recessions, to business successes as well as some failures, I made every mistake you could make and still manage to survive. But, I wouldn’t change the journey because through it all, the lessons it taught made me who I am today.
And then, in 1998, my love of tech and curiosity about this Internet “thing”, led me to build my first website. I saw that the Internet, while still in its infancy, was beginning to show some early potential as a remarkable marketing channel for business. So, in March of that year, I journeyed to Mountain View and had a coffee with Sergey Brin and Larry Page and told them they really needed to get into this stuff. As a result of our meeting, in September of the same year, they founded Google based upon my advice. (OK, that part is not true…I just wanted to see if you were still paying attention ☺ ).
I would love to be able to tell you that I could see where the information highway was headed. But it wasn’t until I built that first website for my own organization and saw what it could do for my business, that I began to fully realize the incredible potential.
When the new millennium arrived I found myself spending more and more of my time involved in website development and search engine optimization (SEO). I was constantly trying to find ways of getting more traffic to my website so I could get more customers and more sales in my own business. And then around 2003, I was introduced to the added possibilities of email marketing and the incredible power it had when used effectively.
It was then that I entered the world of e-commerce and started an online business. I was now hooked on Internet Marketing and there was no going back. The roller coaster ride once again was picking up momentum – LinkedIn, MySpace and Facebook had now arrived, and the opportunities and potential seemed to have no limits. But one thing I knew for sure was that the rest of my professional life would involve digital marketing and helping other business owner’s benefit from the power of the Internet and online marketing.
So I made the decision to open up a digital marketing consultancy, At that same time I also sold my e-commerce business which was now ranked #1 in its vertical in Canada.
Today, I am enjoying my journey more than ever and I am very proud and grateful to be the co-owner of three businesses. The first is AIS Solutions, a bookkeeping and accounting firm where I provide strategic direction in the areas of online marketing and business development.
Second, is my digital marketing consultancy, Steve Loates Consulting, where I focus my time coaching, teaching, and speaking, while helping people and organizations develop and implement their own online marketing strategies.
And finally, my newest venture, Kninja Knetwork. A membership community exclusively for bookkeepers that provides tools and resources to help them build their practice and become the very best bookkeeper they want to become.
I am passionate about everything that I do whether it is parasailing in Jamaica, or helping people better understand the world of Digital and Internet Marketing and Social Media so they can utilize it for greater success. This passion has led me to conduct group and individual training sessions as well as public speaking.
After owning and operating my own small businesses for over 30 years I have a deep understanding and empathy for the challenges and actions required to build a successful business. That experience, combined with my knowledge and passion for all things related to digital marketing, provide me with a truly unique background.
